The E-CONTRAIL team participated in SESAR Innovation Days 2024 (SIDs), held in Rome from November 12–15. The SIDs, a premier event in European air traffic research, provides an excellent platform each year for sharing innovative work and fostering collaboration.
A key highlight for the E-CONTRAIL project was the presentation by Irene Ortiz of the scientific paper: “Satellite-Based Quantification of Contrail Radiative Forcing over Europe: A Two-Week Analysis of Aviation-Induced Climate Effects.” This groundbreaking study drew significant interest for its innovative approach and scientific impact, since it is the first time that a large-scale quantification of contrail radiative impacts has been conducted relying solely on satellite observations.
The E-CONTRAIL project poster was also presented, showcasing the project’s goal and intermediate results related to the development of an AI algorithm for contrail detection and the current work on quantifying contrail radiative forcing for a future mitigation of aviation's climate impact.
SESAR Innovation Days 2024 provided a valuable opportunity to engage with the research community, explore synergies, and advance discussions on sustainable aviation. We look forward to contributing further at SESAR Innovation Days 2025 in Ljubljana.
