Project coordinator

The University Carlos III of Madrid is a public university in the Community of Madrid, Spain, which at present, consists of 137 recognised Research Groups dependent on 27 academic departments. The Aerospace Engineering faculty group covers multiple research expertise such as the Aircraft Operations Lab, led by Manuel Soler, the E-CONTRAIL’s Project Coordinator. UC3M will contribute by developing remote sensing algorithms for the detection of contrails and aviation-induced cloudiness, associating them to the flights that induced them. UC3M will coordinate the project and be responsible for the dissemination, communication, and exploitation of the main project results, proven by its previous experience.

Meet the team

The Royal Belgian Institute for Space Aeronomy is a Belgian federal scientific institute with main research and public services in the field of space aeronomy, including the physics and chemistry of the atmosphere of Earth and other planets and outer space. BIRA also has closely worked with UC3M as a partner in the SESAR ALARM project and successfully published few conference papers. BIRA will contribute by developing the climate impact assessment and the visualization tool dashboard. The dashboard will include the climate impact of contrails that were assessed by tracking the aviation contrails prediction using deep learning models. This will enable an understanding of the climate impact of contrails.

The KTH Royal Institute of Technology is a public university in Stockholm. It focuses on research and education in engineering and technology and is Sweden’s largest technical university. The Engineering Mechanics department is part of the School of Engineering Sciences whose research and education activities include physics, mathematics, and engineering mechanics. KTH will contribute by developing the relevant dee-learning models to predict the radiative forcing of the contrails based on data-archive numerical weather forecasts and historical traffic. The deep-learning model will also be applicable for the development of the climate impact assessment that will be presented in the visualization tool dashboard.

Meet the team

The Royal Meteorological Institute of Belgium is a Belgian federal institute engaged in scientific research in the field of meteorology. The institute focuses on multiple research fields such as climate projections, hydrometeorology, atmospheric modelling, among others. Within the Remote Sensing from Space Department, RMI has a unique competence at the European level for the measurement of the Earth radiation budget. RMI also has collaborated with UC3M on the topics of AI and weather, which results in one joint paper, one national project, and one EU-funded project (MAP). RMI will contribute by bringing its remote sensing expertise into the project. The remote sensing methods and radiative transfer models will enable the measurement of contrails in the radiative forcing of the atmosphere.
