E-CONTRAIL
Climate Hotspot Prediction Service

About the dashboard

Contrails and aviation-induced cloudiness significantly contribute to climate change by trapping heat in the Earth's atmosphere. Current air traffic management systems lack effective tools to predict and mitigate these environmental impacts. The E-CONTRAIL Climate Hotspot Prediction Service addresses this gap by providing real-time predictions of high-impact contrail formation areas, enabling stakeholders to optimize flight paths for reduced environmental footprint and enhanced regulatory compliance.

AI-driven model

The used model is capable of predicting the volumes of airspace with conditions conducive to large global warming impacts due to contrails and aviation-induced cloudiness. This AI model -trained using historical data, including satellite observations, weather, and aerial traffic- offers real-time predictions to help mitigate the environmental impact of aviation.

User-friendly visualization

This user-friendly visualization tool will be implemented to enable flight dispatchers, airlines, Air Navigation Service Providers, and the Network Manager to optimize flight paths and airspace management, helping to reduce the environmental footprint of aviation.

Sustainability and Compliance

The solution supports environmental sustainability by reducing aviation’s climate impact and enhances regulatory compliance by helping stakeholders meet environmental requirements and carbon reduction targets. By integrating climate impact mitigation into the ATM Master Plan, it aligns with SESAR’s objectives for sustainable and efficient air traffic management.
