UC3M, the project coordinator of the E-CONTRAIL project, recently attended the Contrail Observations Workshop organized by Google Research and Breakthrough Energy in London. The workshop fostered strategic collaboration among key players, such as universities, airlines, flight plan providers and NGOs, to mitigate the effects of aviation-induced contrails on global warming.
Discussions focused on enhancing scientific research, engaging industry operators, and effectively communicating results to policymakers, while also exploring strategies for raising public awareness. Significant advancements in technologies such as ground cameras, satellite imagery, weather forecasting, and data sharing were highlighted, providing a platform for discussing developments and networking with peers.
UC3M's Participation:
Researchers from UC3M attended the workshop to deepen their understanding of contrail management techniques. While one representative was present in London, other team members attended online, each focusing on areas like trajectory optimization, contrail plume modeling, contrail generation using sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), and contrail detection. Additionally, expertise on the operational costs of contrail avoidance was contributed.
Overall, the event was a valuable opportunity for UC3M to further the E-CONTRAIL project's research and foster collaborations aimed at advancing sustainable aviation practices. The insights and connections gained during the workshop are expected to significantly benefit the project's ongoing efforts.
