The E-CONTRAIL project participated in the XXIV Science & Innovation Week organized by Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M) and the Community of Madrid with a captivating workshop titled “Aircraft contrails: climate impact quantified with satellites and AI.” This outreach event, held on Monday, November 11th, took place at Leganés campus as part of the UC3M's extensive offering of over 50 public-facing scientific events that encouraged attendees to explore the university’s cutting-edge research in R&D+I.
The E-CONTRAIL team showcased the project's work to a diverse audience, answering pivotal questions about contrail formation and their environmental significance. Participants engaged in two hands-on experiments to unravel the science behind the formation of aviation-induced clouds and their climate effects. In addition, the workshop provided an opportunity to interact with advanced tools for detecting and analyzing contrails using satellite data and AI-driven techniques.
This outreach event highlighted the importance of ongoing SESAR Joint Undertaking-funded research in addressing aviation’s environmental footprint and demonstrated the real-world applications of AI and satellite technology in environmental studies, making these insights accessible to the public.
The E-CONTRAIL team thanks everyone who attended and encourages continued dialogue about sustainable aviation solutions.
