E-CONTRAIL Featured on NCC News TV program

Updated: May 27

The E-CONTRAIL project has captured international attention with its recent feature on NCC News, broadcast widely across the Ibero-American region. The segment, produced by the Aircraft Operations Lab at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M), highlighted the project’s cutting-edge efforts to detect aviation-induced contrails and predict their climate impact using artificial intelligence.

In the feature, Dr. Manuel Soler, coordinator of E-CONTRAIL, shared insights into the project’s intermediate results. He emphasized the role of AI in analyzing flight patterns and atmospheric conditions to better understand contrail formation—a key factor in the environmental footprint of aviation.

“The project develops artificial intelligence algorithms to detect condensation trails produced by aviation and quantify their impact on global warming” said Soler. “Intermediate results show an accuracy in estimating the climatic impact of contrails of between 60 and 80%.”

The E-CONTRAIL project is a European Green Deal project funded by SESAR Joint Undertaking. By combining climate science, satellite data, and machine learning algorithms, the project aims to help understand the climate impact of contrails, paving the way for smarter, greener flight operations.
